So once again, I've found a new favourite movie - and Clayton Rohner is still a fox. I definitely liken the experience of finding and watching this movie to when I found Pretty Smart. Modern Girls is basically everything that I had hoped Pretty Smart would be and more. The characters were immensely likeable and the story sweet and fun without being completely unrealistic. It's a little hard to explain in detail because of all the crazy stuff going on, but I'll give it my best shot.

Beautiful blonde Kelly, serious brunette Margot and crazy redhead Cece are roommates living in LA. To escape the daily grind of their tedious jobs (pet store, call centre and department store respectively) the girls are totally into the LA club scene where they drink and dance the night away. After a rough day at work where Cece was fired, she can think of nothing more that she would rather do than go out and have a great time and not think about her life until Monday, but Kelly throws a spanner in the works when she takes the girls car without telling them to go chasing after her dropkick ex boyfriend Brad thus leaving Margot and Cece stranded at home. In her rush to chase after Brad, Kelly completely forgot that she had a date set up with Clifford (Cliffy for short), a nerdy customer from the pet store she works in who bears a striking resemblance to Cece's favourite rock star Bruno X. When Cliffy arrives to pick up Kelly, the girls tell him that Kelly said she will be meeting them later and drag them to the club with them, if only just to use him for his car.

Cece and Margot explain to Cliffy that they have certain rules that they abide by when going out nightclubbing. They never pay for parking, they never carry cash and they never pay for drinks - leaving Cliffy to wonder just what kind of night he's in for. Once they arrive at the club it isn't long before Cliffy finds out the girls used him when he discovers Kelly draped all over Brad at the DJ table. Annoyed, but too nice a guy to do anything about it, Cliffy joins Margot and Cece for a drink anyway.

In a genius stroke of luck for Cece, visiting rock star Bruno X arrives at that very nightclub and after some careful manoeuvring on her part, she finds herself dancing with the enigmatic Bruno. Bruno is completely enamoured with Cece, but the pair get separated when the police raid the club. Kelly also gets separated from Margot and Cece, heading off with some of Brad's friends, who are just as loserish as Brad himself. Cece is devastated and is convinced her life is over until she spots a white limo just like Bruno's and attempt to chase it down. Unfortunately it isn't his, and the trio head off to another bar for a drink.

Meanwhile Brad's friends have given Kelly some ecstasy and left her behind at a rough bar, while Cliffy and the other two girls try to find Bruno X by crashing his video shoot, which they discover he has skipped because he is off looking for Cece). When Margot finds out from Cece who Kelly left with, she realises she might be in trouble and they head off to find her.

Cliffy and the girls are in for a night they'll never forget as the search for Bruno X continues. Kelly is a magnet for trouble and leads the girls from one place to the next chasing after her always arriving just in the nick of time to save her from getting in really bad trouble. Cliffy realises after spending most of the night with Margot, that her cold demeanour may be just a front and that maybe Kelly shouldn't have been the one to ask on a date after all. But for Cece, time is running out and she must find Bruno before he leaves the country the following morning, or she may lose this chance at true love forever.

This is a truly crazy movie with so much happening that it's hard to keep up (or explain to someone else). If my review hasn't done it justice at all, I did the best I could do! And all I can suggest to you is track it down and watch it, it's definitely worth the effort it takes to find. It epitomises the 80's like not many other movies can, and it's soundtrack is outstanding. Those damn Bruno X songs will be in your head for weeks! Once again, no DVD yet (probably due to the cost of licensing the soundtrack). Come on MGM! Lets see it already!

Also, quite predictably I must add that black eyeliner is a very hot look for young Mr. Rohner.
