Rarely would I ever dream a little dream of
finding quality in the $9.95 Ezy DVD bargain bin, but I think I struck
bad movie gold with this piece of work. Picture this, a big explosion, a
pretty girl and Corey Haim circa 1988 on the cover (NB. The cover
actually lied. This movie was made in 1996 and Corey Haim looked a lot
more like a homosexual than a cute punk kid...but anyway). Being the
huge Coreyx2 fan that I am, I bought it immediately, and like the true
movie collector that I am, let it gather dust on my shelf for a good few
months before I actually got around to watching it.
But when I did, it made me smile in that way that only a really terrible
movie can.
The movie starts out with a literal bang. A group of decidedly Arabic
terrorists take over an army base housing a very important chemical
weapon. How do they get in? A corrupt US officer working from the
inside. Oooooh. The plot or lack thereof thickens...
In this sequel to "Demolition High", Lenny Slater heads off to
University with a bad reputation. He pulls pranks, lies, cheats, steals
etc. Okay maybe not, but he has an earring so that must mean he's a bad
boy! Lenny is on the football team (roflrofl) but can't catch a pass to
save his life. Maybe he should spend a little more time at practice as
opposed to gawking at Jenny - a smart girl at the college on an
athletics scholarship. (Lenny and Jenny...ookay.)
Meanwhile, after mouthing off at the teams star quarterback, it looks as
if dear old Lenny is about to get his arse handed to him, football ogre
style, so he does a runner. He finds the perfect place to hide. A bus!
But little does he know that that very bus is about to head off on a
field trip that we, the viewer know is being attacked by terrorists
threatening to poison the city's water! AND Jenny and football bully guy also
happen to be on that bus too! Can Corey Haim save the day, dodge the bullies
and get the girl? Just like in Demolition High?
 Demolition University has all the personality of
a washing machine, but the thrills and chills of that spin cycle will
have you watching till the very last frame...Okay so maybe not. But if
you like your movies bad with a capital B I suggest you give it a whirl.
Dialogue and decent acting were definitely left out of the game plan,
along with sense, character development and Corey Haims career future.
Seems all you need to get a movie financed these days are a few big
explosions and a washed up child actor.
I don't think this movie was intentionally a comedy - but it sure had a
lot of laughs for me. Corey Haim shows us that some people sure don't
age gracefully and that Corey "Rock and Roll High School Forever"
Feldman is by far the cooler of the two. Ami Dolenz is a hottie, but
sadly has not improved her acting skills any since "She's Out Of
Control". There wasn't really anyone else in the movie that I can
remember. May I also add that I saw Jim Wynorski's name in the credits.
If I were to rate this movie, I'd give it a 1.5 out of five. One for
Ami Dolenz, and 0.5 because Corey Haim is half the man he used to be.
