Well,
it's a new financial year anyway, and this new financial year I plan on
being financial enough to be able to buy every DVD from my super dooper
spectacular DVDAF wish list. *Hint. That's alot and I'll be needing a
lotto win or something of that calibre.
But since new years are all about new beginnings, I'm hoping that this
brand spanking new July will mean a lot of new awesome stuff in the
months ahead. I can hope, right? Lets take a look at whats on offer for
July.
6-JUL The Shadow
1994 (Region2/UK)
Based on the
1930's comic strip, puts the hero up against his arch
enemy, Shiwan Khan, who plans to take over the world by holding a city
to ransom using an atom bomb. Using his powers of invisibility and "The
power to cloud men's minds", the Shadow comes blazing to the city's
rescue with explosive results.
I've
never seen
this movie. I don't know how or why, but I haven't. It's somehow
slipped under my radar time and time again. I get a strong Dick Tracy
vibe from it, and I like Dick Tracy. Ooh Tim Curry is in this movie
too! For some reason I thought Jennifer Tilly was in this. What am I
getting confused with?
6-JUL Tokyo Gore Police (Tôkyô zankoku keisatsu) 2008 (Region2/UK)
Set in a future-world
vision of Tokyo where the police have been privatized and bitter
self-mutilation is so casual that advertising is often specially geared
to the "cutter" demographic, this is the story of
samurai-sword-wielding Ruka and her mission to avenge her father's
assassination. Ruka is a cop from a squad who's mission is to destroy
homicidal mutant humans known as "engineers" possessing the ability to
transform any injury to a weapon in and of itself.
YES YES YES! This movie is already out here, and
after watching The Machine Girl last weekend I am dying to give this a
shot. Japanese Ultra Gore movies seem to have taken on a fascinating
new appeal to me lately, especially when it is super low budget and
exceptionally bad. I'm still not watching Ichi the Killer though.
Razorblades + Nipples = Nuh-uh.
7-JUL Near Dark 1987 (Region1/US)
A mid-western farm boy
reluctantly becomes a member of the undead when a girl he meets turns
out to be part of a band of southern vampires who roam the highways in
stolen cars.
I am a fan of this movie. Although, I do have no
idea why it is being released on DVD yet again, perhaps it's out of
print? You know, I never made the connection between Adrian Pasdar and
this movie. I think I need to watch it again.
23-JUL O.C. Babes and the Slasher of Zombietown 2008 (Region1/US)
The night seems like any
other for Sean and Ed, filled with rejection. That is until a half
eaten woman runs into the bar and warns them about zombies outside.
Once they lock the bar up they start dropping like flies. They soon
notice though that not everything is what it seems and not all people
are who you think they are.
Sean and Ed? In a bar? With Zombies outside?
Original. I was all for this when I saw that spectacular title, but now
after reading the synopsis I'm a bit meh. Written and directed by rock
horror muso Creep Creepersin, who's also responsible for such cinematic
masterpieces as Vaginal Holocaust and Caged Lesbos A-Go-Go. *cough*
27-JUL Lesbian Vampire Killers 2009 (Region2/UK)
Their women having been
enslaved by the local pack of lesbian vampires thanks to an ancient
curse, the remaining menfolk of a rural town send two hapless young
lads out onto the moors as a sacrifice.
I have seen this, and I must say that it's a solid little flick. I
really enjoyed it and if it comes out locally, I wouldn't pass on it
for a decent price. I should have a review for it up soon. Oh, and it's
not a porno as the title might suggest. It's a horror comedy.
28-JUL Oh! My Zombie Mermaid (Â! Ikkenya puroresu) 2004 (Region1/US)
A rival of the wrestler
Shishioh (Shinya Hashimoto) destroys Shishioh's new house. Shishioh's
wife is injured and at the same time seems to have caught a very
strange disease which turns her into a mermaid (!). Shishioh agrees to
take part in a bloody fight against very weird opponents, arranged by
TV producers out for sensation, but pretending they wish to help
Shishioh and his wife.
This sounds like the greatest movie ever. I need to see this. Now.
28-JUL Samurai School (Sakigake!! Otokojuku) 2008 (Region1/US)
Samurai School is a very
fun little film from first-time director (and martial arts sensation)
Tak Sakaguchi. Set at a hidden academy that teaches wimps how to be men
(think of a low-rent Hogwarts), the first half of the feature follows a
group of ragtag freshmen who can't seem to go seconds without getting
their butts kicked by the near-tyrannical faculty. Then, when an old
expelled student returns and demands that the school be given over to
him, the freshmen must band together, save their school, and become men.
There's certainly a lot of Japanese flicks in this update. I'm loving
the asian cinema at the moment. I was drawn to this one because it
sounds a lot like Korean movie Volcano High which is one of my faves.
That's all for this month. Time to finally write some reviews hey?

Man, I have been procrastinating like nobodies business. Out of control
even. Probably because there's nothing noteworthy going down. Off
topic, I have the worst taste in my mouth right now. What the hell did
I eat? Oh well. Moving on. What month is it again? May? Holy
crap.
Ever been out somewhere shopping and all of a sudden you stumble across
this massive sale on DVD's? You get real excited wondering what awesome
bargains await you inside...but then you head in and realise that
amongst all those masses of DVD's, there's only like four you've ever
heard of before?
That's how I felt reading about the new releases for May.
Seriously, it's just pages and pages and pages of stuff I really don't
give a rats about. In this harsh econmic climate, I want to help the
economy. You people aren't making that easy! Help me help you gawdammit!
On the 12th May, those of you living in the US get the very same Man With
the Screaming Brain/Alien Apolcalypse twin DVD pack that
we got here in Australia last November. Allow me to feel smug about
that for once in my life.
My
Bloody Valentine
(yes the remake) comes out on the 19th. But I'm only including it here
because the special edition includes the 3D version and they give you
glasses. I'm all about 3D movies and free shit. I never did get to see
this at the cinemas. I wonder if it's any good.
On the 26th, theres an Exploiation Double Feature with Don't Go
in the Woods Alone and The Forest. I haven't seen either
of these, and I've always been really intrigued by The Forest. Might be
worth a look.
Back here in Aussie Land, pickings are slim also. Breakin'
2: Electric Boogaloo which was delayed last month is out
on the 6th May, along with Diary of
the Dead on Blu-Ray.
I did mean seperate, by the way. You can't buy them together. Althought
that sure would be random.
Also on the sixth is the Complete
V Miniseries. (I know, it's TV but I'm scraping here.) I
like V. It's so odd to see Robert Englund not want to kill
people.
Seeing as that's it for May, we may as well recap any and all
interestingness that we missed in my period of non update-itis.
